Although some attempts were documented in the late 1800’s, it wasn’t until the 1940’s when methodical research first began producing a breakthrough in the 1950’s at the Schenectady Laboratories General Electric laboratory. This is the first documented approach of growing a man-made diamond with a reproducible procedure. These diamonds were not considered gem quality but are recognized as the start of the process that now allows us to create the pure, real, laboratory diamonds that we have today.
